How Do Toric Lens Work?

Before we can ask "How do toric lens work", we really need to understand what they do, and what they were created for.

Toric contact lenses can be soft, meaning they are made from soft plastic that can alter its shape to fit the shape of the eye. This is as opposed to hard (gas permeable - GP) lenses which are rigid in construction. A toric lens is special, in that it was designed to help correct astigmatism.

What Is Astigmatism?

Astigmatism can take two forms, but it is usually understood to mean an optical malfunction caused by a misshaping of either the cornea or the optic lens. A normal cornea is one with is round in shape, just like a ball. In an astigmatic, the shape is different, and the ends of the cornea have extended ends. More rugby ball or american football shaped. What happens then is that the light hits the cornea in two places rather than one. This is because the shape of the astigmatic eye has a steeper and flatter curve due to the shape of the cornea. This is called corneal astigmatism.

Sometimes, astigmatism is the result of an irregularly shaped optic lens, which is located behind the cornea. This is called lenticular astigmatism.

The effect to the sufferer is much the same though. Astigmatism manifests itself as slightly blurred vision, but can also cause headaches and eye aches.

How Is a Toric Lens Different To Other Contact Lenses?

When you place a contact lens in your eye, the lens sits on top of a film of water. If it didn't, your eye would be dry, and it would cause you discomfort. Because the lens is on a liquid platform, it can rotate, but in non astigmatics, this is not really a problem. However, in an astigmatic, the lens needs to stay put in order to correct the astigmatism. In a toric lens, this is achieved by weighting the lens so that the bottom is heavier than the top. This of course means that the bottom of the lens will always point downwards, ensuring that the prescription of the lens acts correctly.

There is one other difference of a toric lens over a normal one, in that the lens has two prescriptions in one. One will correct the astigmatism, and the other will correct the shortsightedness or long sightedness (depending on what you have).

Because of the more complex nature of the toric lens, they are often more expensive than conventional lenses.

Ok, it happens. Whatever the circumstances, you have a problem of removing a stuck contact lens. Maybe you thought you took the lens out, but in all the mess and slipperiness that accompanies contact lens insertion and removal, the lens pinged back into your your eye.

..... and now you cannot find it

..... or you cannot grab it ....

..... or perhaps you did what I did once, and put two lenses in one eye and then spent an hour scouring the room for the missing one.

Removing a Stuck Contact Lens The Easy Way

If you use hard contact lenses, then perhaps the best way to place and remove contact lenses is to buy a contact lens plunger. The DMV original hard contact lens plunger is used with hard contact lenses. It is simple and effective for removing hard contact lenses. All you have to do is moisten the cup of the remover and gently place it squarely on the contact lens. The lens will adhere to the suction cup and will come off the eye easily.

If your lens is stuck, sometimes the problem can be caused by an inability to get adequate purchase with your fingers, especially as your eyes begin to tear. Remember that you can damage your lens or your eye by trying to pull the lens away from your eye with your fingers. The lens plunger will prove very useful under these circumstances.

Please note that this accessory cannot be used with soft contact lenses.

For soft lenses, you really need to use your fingers, but because the lenses are so malleable, you should be ok to manipulate the lens without damaging either the eye or the lens. You may need to hold your eyelid away from the eye with your other hand, because the lid will want to keep shutting, especially if it is starting to get irritated.

In both cases, it would be good to to lubricate the eye first, to aid the removal of the lens. Sometimes it is purely the dryness of the eye that can cause the problem, especially if you have worn the lenses for a significant length of time. So adding some drops may well make the problem much easier to manage.

Some people worry that the lens can go behind the eye, which can exacerbate the removal problem. If you start to panic, you could hurt yourself.

It is impossible for the lens to go behind your eye, so please don't worry.

If you find yourself struggling, just keep adding drops to ease your discomfort, until you can get to a professional for help. If these means waiting overnight, then your eye can survive. Just make sure that you add plenty of lubrication to stop the lens becoming too dry.

What are the best color contacts for dark eyes? I think that the answer to this lies in circumstances. Before we get into that, we should just go over some of the colors that are available to you.

Integrated Project Management Software - Issues With Localisation (Part I)

Having a fully integrated job costing and accounting system, that works perfectly in one country, should make it relatively straightforward to employ it in other countries as well. After all most modern operating systems are able to provide a more or less seamless international and multilingual functionality on the touch of a few buttons. In particular for a multinational company having easy access to all of their systems across borders is an important aspect of management.

The mere translation of the project management interface is indeed quite an easy part of the localisation as most languages have words for "project" or "sales invoice" etc. There are however two main issues that will arise, one due to the integration of accounting and one due to the multilingual interoperability of the system:

This first part of the article will look at the Accounting/Bookkeeping issues facing multinational organisations and come up with suggestions of how to best address them when localising a software. The multilingual accessibility issues will be addressed in a Part II soon to be published on this forum:

Despite the fact that all modern accounting rules everywhere are based on the double entry bookkeeping procedures developed several hundred years ago in Northern Italy by Cotrugli and Paciolo there are slight differences in their application in different countries. Taking aside company taxation and sales tax rules - even some of the more basic bookkeeping procedures and regulations differ from country to country. Following are just some examples of those subtle differences:

- Anglo-American bookkeeping gives the user relative flexibility with regard to how they code their accounts or how they number their transactions

- Spain has fixed GL codes that must be used as the basis of all systems in those countries

- Germany where there used to be a prescribed coding structure - like in Spain - has relaxed this rule, however the historical structure is still used as a semi standard as the main accounting software used by the association of tax advisors is built around this structure

- In Italy there is a rule that the sequence of transaction numbers has to be validated against the date of those transactions

Although it is possible from a programming point of view to adapt the software to accommodate all those different regulations, it makes a program grow immensely in code and complexity. This is even more the case where in different countries contradicting rules need to be applied. So what is the best way for a software to incorporate the requirements of international functionality?

Two approaches come to mind:

One possible way would be to not apply any changes for a particular country in the core coding of the software, but have optional modules for different localisations.

The core of the client software would contain only the basics adhered to by every national accounting system, such as the double entry principle, whilst the add-on modules would apply additional validations and rules to the data processing. Changes to any of the modules could easily be tracked, testing would be straightforward as only one module would be affected and the whole setup of both the client as well as the data base would remain clear and slim.

Having add-on modules would however mean that the software can no longer be called "multinational", but would now be just a framework of many localised independent software systems. A client installed with one localisation would not be able to access a data base used with a different localisation. In particular in bigger multinational companies, where a group auditing is necessary, this would be a big disadvantage.

Another solution would be to have a switch in the data base to either apply - say - the Swiss or the Polish rules. That switch in the data base would trigger a second switch in the client software that logs into it to use the right local settings. In a simplified way this may be compared to a word processor document where the text is specified as being a particular language and the word processing software then applies the spell check for that language.

A downside of this solution would be that all the settings and switches in the data base would also mean a growth of the client software to pick up all of these and that every increase of software coding brings with it a growth of the possibility of bugs or other faults.

The big advantage would be that this way allowed for the client software to be used against any of the accounts data files used in different countries. Multinational group headquarters would only need to use their one software installation to log into any of the overseas accounts and project management data files. Despite the risks due to it's increased complexity and the impact this solution would have on any testing department of a software house the added flexibility and interoperability of this way seems to make it the most preferable solution for equipping an integrated project management system with a truly international accounting functionality.

Calf Cramps - How To Get More Gain For Less Pain!

I cannot imagine that there is anyone past the age of about 10, that has never had calf cramps. Let's face it, they are horrible. From having no pain and full movement to excruciating agony in a matter of seconds. I think that you can relate to that. If you are into sports though, calf cramps are far more common, and can stop you in your tracks. So what are calf cramps exactly? Anyone competing in sports know that they usually occur after strenuous exercise. But what about those poor folk who wake up with cramps for no discernable reason. So, how do they occur?

How Calf Cramps Can Occur

Although not an exhaustive list by any means, here are some common causes of calf cramps

• Dehydration: If you are involved in any sports, especially if you are serious about it, you should always ensure that you maintain your fluid levels. As you get hot, your body sweats, and you lose fluid. If these fluids are not replaced, there is a danger of dehydration, and dehydration can accelerate the onset of calf cramps.

• Over tiredness: If you exercise longer or harder than you are used to, there is a danger of calf cramps. Sometimes, in competitive situations, this can be difficult to avoid, but in training, you should increase demands on your body slowly, so that it can get used to it. That is the purpose of training after all. If you train to peak fitness in competition, the likelihood of calf cramps or any injury for that matter, is reduced.

• Vitamin deficiencies: There is speculation that that athletes who get calf cramps could suffer from low levels of potassium, sodium, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus.

• Poor warm up: It is vital that you warm your body up carefully before any exercise. If you don't stretch your calves properly for example, they continually stay contracted and are thus more susceptible to cramps.

• Poor circulation: I can attest to this myself. When I was young, I played a lot of soccer, and used shin guards to protect the front of my legs. To keep the shin guards in place, I used ties to hold my socks up. More than once, during a strenuous game, my calves tightened up and cramped. The cause, I am sure, was poor circulation as a result of tight sock ties.

Some of these causes will have obvious remedies for example. I shouldn't have tied up my socks so tight for example! If cramps occur during exercise, then stretching the calf whilst massaging can alleviate the pain, and stop the muscle from tightening. However, there are other things that you can do which might stop the problem occurring.

• Stretch your muscles before exercise as part of a regular warm up routine. Try and warm down after exercise as well.

• Ensure that you stay properly hydrated during exercise and drink plenty of water

Fender Electric Guitars - As Played By Stevie Ray Vaughan

Stevie Ray Vaughan hailed from Dallas Texas, and his name is synonymous with fender electric guitars. Stevie predominantly played a late fifties or early sixties version of the Strat (opinion is divided on its exact date), but there is no doubting that it was a Fender Stratocaster (Strat) guitar. Stevie seemed to favour this guitar over most others, and the sound is distinctly Fender, and Strat in particular, in quality.

The sound produced by Stevie Ray is almost classic Fender. The Strat is very distinctive, and adds a beautiful tone, especially to Stevie Ray's blues playing. There is a lot of recorded music by Stevie Ray, and all of it is great to hear. I certainly recommend that you seek some out and enjoy the Texas blues at its very best.

Stevie's background was steeped in the blues, so it is no surprise that his recordings feature many blues cuts. The video of Stevies' performance of Texas Flood is a great example of his feel for the blues. Stevie didn't stop with the blues though, and he used his Fender Guitar to great effect on many of his own compositions, as well as blues classics. He played a kind of shuffle exquisitely, as demonstrated on brilliant tunes such as 'Pride and Joy' and 'Cold Shot'. SRV also covered many rock classics, and could do anything song he turned his attention to justice.

I had the great privilege of seeing Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble at the Hammersmith Odeon (it's now called something else I think) in London, in the late 1980's. Apart from the pleasure of seeing SRV play, the event was doubly memorable for me because Eric Clapton came in, accompanied by Ringo Starr and other halves, and sat down in front of me! How cool was that.

Stevie wrapped his Fender around all his classic cuts, including some specialty rocks songs that he covered, in honour of his peers. I am thinking here of Jimi Hendrix, for whom SRV covered Little Wing and Voodoo Chile. And Stevie's renditions of these songs were spectacular. However, remembering Eric Clapton, reminded me of another SRV cover, which I recall EC getting very animated about, And that was a version of Stevie Wonder's classic song 'Superstition', played with all the panache you would expect from a super showman like Stevie Ray Vaughan. And if Eric Clapton loved it, who am I to argue?

I am very grateful to the likes of Google's You Tube that allows us to see late great artists like Stevie Ray Vaughan plying their trade. Seeing these great performers, many on stage where they were in their element. is a chance to see great workmen use their tools of trade, which in Stevie Ray's case, was a Fender Electric Guitar!

Astygmatism And Contact Lenses

A debate continues as to whether astygmatism and contact lenses are compatible bed fellows. For many years, it was unclear as to whether contact lenses of any sort could assist an astigmatism sufferer.

Astigmatism is a misshaping of the the cornea. A normal cornea is round, but in an astigmatism sufferer, the shape is more like an American football, or rugby ball. An astigmatic eye sees light focusing on two points in the back of your eye, rather than on just one in a normal eye. This is because an astigmatic cornea has a steeper and flatter curve due to the shape of the cornea. This is called corneal astigmatism.

Sometimes, astigmatism is the result of an irregularly shaped lens, which is located behind the cornea. This is called lenticular astigmatism.

Either kind of astigmatism can usually be corrected with spectacles or contact lenses. In some case, refractive surgery can also help astigmatism sufferers.

Astigmatic Symptoms

If you have only a small amount of astigmatism, you may not notice it or have just slightly blurred vision. You may have had the problem for many years but never noticed, because small changes over many years may not have indicated a problem to you. However, uncorrected astigmatism may also give you headaches or a pain behind the eyes, which you might think of as eyestrain. Or, you may notice distorted or blurred vision at all distances.

Astigmatism can also affect children. Astigmatism can affect their ability to see properly in lessons, so it's vitally important that children have their eyes examined at regular intervals in order to detect any astigmatism early on. I personally started complaining to my parents when I was about 8 that I could not see the blackboard at school properly. I was taken to doctor, who advised my parents that I was just trying to get out of school. My continued complaining however, eventually led my parents to find the only optician in town (this was some years ago) who confirmed short sightedness and astigmatism.

I would certainly hope that my children get a more sympathetic ear from the medical profession then I did all those years ago.

Treating Astigmatism

Unless it is extreme, astigmatism can be treated with glasses or contact lenses.

Many people with astigmatism believe that they can't wear contact lenses at all, which is something that was alluded to at the start of this article, or that only hard (also called gas permeable - GP) contact lenses can correct astigmatism.

For many years, this was the case, but now there are soft contact lenses available, that correct astigmatism. These are called toric contact lenses.

Toric lenses have a special correction built into them and may also contain a prescription for nearsightedness or farsightedness if you need it.

While soft toric lenses work well for many people, if you have severe astigmatism, you might find that GP contact lenses or spectacles help you more. Your optician will be able to advise you.

At first glance, the Pilates Reformer looks like a refugee from the medieval times. Something that might have been used to extract information from less than willing participants! A closer examination reveals that the Pilates Reformer is actually quite an elegant machine and something that has been well made for what it is designed to do.

So what does the Pilates Reformer do exactly? Perhaps the best thing to do is to explain some of the principals behind Pilates, so that you will better understand what the Reformer is trying to achieve.

The definition of Pilates is the balanced development of the deep and superficial muscles that stabilize, align, and move the trunk of the body, especially the abdominals and muscles of the back, which many fitness teachers might also refer to as core strength. core strength looks beyond the superficial, and sometimes cosmetic, outer appearance, and looks at the power of the internal muscles.

This definition is further broken down into the following principals that govern Pilates. Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath, and Flow. Let's examine each of these in turn. Incidentally, I should point out that these definitions were not actually stated by the creator of the Pilates system, but were rather inferred by instructors at a later stage.

Centering refers to bringing the focus of the exercise to the centre of the body between the lower ribs and pubic bone. Energetically, Pilates exercises are sourced from this centre.

Concentration simply means bringing one's full attention to the exercise and doing it with full commitment. As with any exercise, giving it your full attention will yield maximum benefit.

Every Pilates exercise must be done with complete muscular control. No body part is left to its own devices. This really goes hand in hand with the previous principal.

In Pilates, awareness is sustained throughout each movement. There is an appropriate placement, alignment relative to other body parts, and trajectory for each part of the body, and precision of movement is important.

Joseph Pilates emphasized using a very full breath in his exercises. He advocated thinking of the lungs as a bellows to pump the air in and out of the body. Most Pilates exercises (as is common in a lot of exercise regimes) coordinate with the breath, and using the breath properly is an important part of Pilates exercise.

Fluidity, grace, and ease are goals applied to all Pilates exercises. A smooth technique is important to the most beneficial use of Pilates.

You may well see that most of these principals are common sense. At least they certainly will be if you have ever been serious about your exercise. If you are new to exercising, and Pilates in particular, then please take the principals listed above as read and you will find that Pilates will be able to do a great deal for you.

Pilates equipment, like the reformer, are very good mirrors of one's flow and concentration as they tend to bang around and suddenly become quite "machine-like" if one loses ones control and flow. The Reformer provides finely tuned exercise resistance that allows one to work very precisely with alignment, core strength, and all of the Pilates exercise principles.

If you are applying for a job abroad (particularly in Europe or South America), a Motivation Letter For Work Abroad takes the place of a Cover Letter. Both resumes and Motivation Letters are much less formal than their United States equivalents. With the proliferation of laptop computers, choosing to upgrade or implement notebook computer memory is not as straight forward as it may seem at first.

There is a variety of different types of memory, and it is important that you choose memory that is compatible with your notebook computer. Memory is also a little delicate, so you need to be very careful when handling it.

Adding Computer Memory - Some Tips

You should ensure that the Notebook is turned of and disconnected from any exterior power supply. No lights should be visible, and if they are, stop and double check for any live power sources.

Notebook computers are a little different to desktop PC’s in that there is no need to take them apart in order to add memory. Access to the memory slots is via a panel located (usually) in the bottom of the laptop. Once you have found this panel, it should be a small matter of using a screwdriver to open up the panel and view the existing memory. In fact, you can do this to check the exact type of memory that your Notebook currently uses, because it is usually shown on the front of the memory strips and should be visible when you open up the memory panel.

The memory strips are usually locked in with small clips on the ends of the strips. To remove existing memory, simply flip the clips and then pull the memory strips gently from their holding place. If you are simply adding memory of course, and there is space available, just add the new memory, gently pushing it in to ensure it is fully seated in the slots, and then close the clips to hold the new memory in place.

Once you have replaced or added your Notebook computer memory, it is simply a case of replacing the access panel, and then screwing the panel back in place.

Finally, power up the Notebook, and ensure that the memory has been read by the Notebook. When the PC starts up, it should count the memory and tell you how much it thinks it has access to.

If any problems occur, repeat the whole procedure, checking very carefully that the memory is properly seated in the notebook.

When I saw how many people were searching for Hydrogenics 60 color contacts on the Internet, I had to do some of my own research. I am familiar with the brand of contact lenses, but I was not aware that they made color contacts.

And guess what?

I couldn't find any! At least not in the sense of color lenses as are usually available on the internet, for cosmetic wear. So don't expect any pitch black mirrored contact lenses!

For the record, what Hydrogenics DO make, are 1-2 week disposable soft contact lenses. The normal package consists of 6 lenses immersed in a buffered saline solution. For the more technically minded amongst you, they Hydrogenics 60 contact lenses are made from 40% polymer (ocufilcon F). The other 60% is of course water. The manufacturer is Ocular Sciences, Inc of San Fancisco, California, in the United States. What you CAN do with these lenses, is to provide a prescription online, so that you can obtain true prescription lenses, as opposed to color contacts which are usually obtainable with a 0.00 power, which means that they are normally only for cosmetic purposes.

What the contact lenses do provide is UV filtering against rays which can be harmful to the cornea. The lenses got approval from the US Food and Drugs Administration in 2002. Here is an extract from their report.

"Approval for the Hydrogenics 60 (ocufilcon F) UV In-monomer tint contact lens indicated for extended wear (up to 7 days / 6 nights between removals for cleaning and disinfection). When prescribing for extended wear, the eye care practitioner may recommend lens wear up to 7 days / 6 nights between removals for cleaning and disinfection.

The eye care practitioner may prescribe the contact lens for either single use disposable wear or for scheduled replacement wear, with cleaning, disinfection, and schedules replacement. When prescribing for scheduled replacement wear, the contact lens may be disinfected using a chemical (not heat) disinfecting system. Hydrogenics 60 (ocufilcon F) UV Blocking Contact Lenses help protect against transmission of harmful UV radiation to the cornea and into the eye"

There is a lot of personal preference involved of course, but here are some tips which might sway your decision.

* If you wear contact lenses, then skiing goggles could be a good idea, because they are snugger around your face.

* Goggles are more likely to steam up, again because they are snug around your face. To experienced skiers this is not so much of a problem, but to novices, this can be an issue. If you keep falling over for example, then you are expending more energy to get up, and getting hotter at the same time. This can cause goggle fog.

* Peripheral vision is better with skiing goggles

* Goggles do a better job of keeping the wind out of your eyes. Again, this could be important if you wear contact lenses whilst skiing.

If you do wear goggles, make sure they are polarized and offer UV protection. I would imagine that all ski goggles would do this anyway, because anyone who skis knows about the intense glare of snow, but if you have a pair of goggles that do not have proper protection, then you could end up with problems.

If you wear tinted contact lenses, then you could get away with it. And if you wear tinted spectacles, and the goggles are large, then that might also be fine, as you can wear the goggles over your spectacles. Bear in mind the point about goggle fogging though. This will apply equally to you if you wear glasses.

One more thing to bear in mind, if you are new to skiing, is that this may not be something that you want to pursue; certainly not until you have tried it. I want to share one easy and small tip how to quickly experiment with places where you can have your sauna installed. I used it to make some furniture rearrangements in my room some days and it can be applied for infrared sauna too.

First, you will need the plan for your house. Ideally, you already have a plan somewhere in your papers, but if you don’t, you need to devote some time to making one. For this you will need several sheets of grid paper, a ruler, a pencil, an eraser, a scissors and some tool for measuring room dimensions, like a measuring tape.

Measure the room where you plan to install an infrared sauna. Take the dimensions as well as position of doors and windows. Also you will need to know where power outlets are placed. Draw it all on a sheet of a grid paper, but do not forget to define a scale first. I recommend taking a scale on which your room covers most space on the paper. Then look up the dimensions of a sauna model you want to buy (you can find the dimensions of some models from reviews on this website). If you have time I also recommend measuring all significant furniture in the room, especially if you plan to rearrange it to free additional space for the sauna.

Now when you have your room plan on the paper with all windows/doors shown, get another grid paper and draw rectangles on it which will represent the pieces of furniture you measured (including a sauna). Note that you need to add 3-4 inches to the dimensions you took to take the spacing between the furniture into account. Cut these figures from the paper.

Having the room plan and the cuts representing furniture you can play and try different combinations to find the best fit for your sauna. Once you master this trick you can find it very addictive. You can try to make the plan of the whole house. To give your models more endurance you can glue them to some harder medium, cardboard for example.

This tip gives you the possibility to try different furniture placements without physically moving things around. Sure, it can’t provide the same level of visualization, but it can help to identify the best options to try. You don’t necessarily have to do all this things on paper, for advanced computer users there is various computer software for house planning but it usually costs money. The paper is free and I believe is just simpler and more natural. Some office suites (like Open Office or Microsoft Office) can be used for these purposes with some improvisation and skill.
