Business And Competition - How To Beat Your Competition At Their Own Game

Giant chain stores with tremendous purchasing power are creating new business realities for smaller companies and Mom and Pop stores by selling products below cost. This forces some of their competitors who cannot compete to go out of business, while others have to change their business model completely to survive. Many of these companies that use creative thinking and change their business models are able to stand up against these Giants and beat them at their own game.

One of my consulting clients, a Distributor who has been in business since the turn of the Century had to face the new business reality of tough competition from a giant chain store who opened new stores in his “back yard.” Realizing they needed to change the business model to meet today’s business challenges, management decided they needed to mainstream their operations, lower operating costs, and implement a “just in time inventory” system at all of their branches in order to stay competitive.

Not having “real time” information between the branches and the headquarters was the first obstacle management had to overcome in order to achieve their goal of “just in time inventory.” The first challenge the Distributor faced was finding the right software house that would not only provide the right software solution, but would also be a partner that would help meet the company’s current and future expansion plans. The second challenge was converting the branches’ data to the headquarters host computer.

Meeting the “just in time inventory” challenge at all branches and providing better customer service:

Changing from departmental computer systems to a centralized computer system was the first step to achieving the “just in time inventory” goal at all branches. Having “real time inventory” status at all locations enabled headquarters to achieve rapid response to low-level inventory, and helped avoid over stocking. The Branches, having the ability to view other branches inventory in “real time mode,” were able to ship products directly from other locations when needed. Achieving the “just in time inventory” goal helped the distributor lower operating costs, sell at competitive prices, and provide better customer service.

The next step after mainstreaming operations was to implement Web Commerce strategy that would allow the distributor to show the product catalog, track buying trends, and update the headquarters computer with the new Web orders in “real time mode.” Starting a new nightshift gave the Distributor’s clients, many of whom were contactors, the ability to stop at the branch early in the morning on the way to the jobsite, pick up their Web orders from the night before, while their car engines were running, and drive away within minutes.

Beating the Giant by becoming a “one stop shopping center” with competitive pricing:

Although, mainstreaming their operations and enabling an e-commerce strategy improved the distributor’s dwindling business, they were still treading water. The giant chain store in the distributor’s “backdoor” began to sell some of the same accessories my client sold, but below their cost. By selling the accessories below the Distributor’s cost, the giant chain store hoping their clients would buy other, more profitable products the Distributor also sold while visiting their stores.

Facing the giant chain store’s challenge, the Distributor’s management team decided to match the giant chain stores prices for the accessories they were selling, provide their customers with better service, and retain their loyalty. Beating Giant Chain Stores “at its own game,” turned the Distributor into “One Stop Shopping Center” where their clients could purchase everything they needed at very competitive prices and get even better customer service.

Final Thoughts On Beating The Competition

Giant chain stores that are creating part of today’s challenging business environment can only be beaten with creative thinking. Implementing new ideas helped the Distributor not only meet the “Giant’s challenge,” but came in ahead of the game by increasing their number of Nationwide Branches by 35% using “just in time inventory” and matching their competitor’s lower price on accessories.

Tips To Getting Guaranteed Website Traffic

You can always guarantee website traffic if you are willing to pay for it. This method of traffic creation is called pay-per-click (or ppc for short) and basically you pay for every visitor you get sent to your site. The best known method of doing this by is using Google AdWords, where your ad is shown on someone else's website, which is hopefully themed towards your ad (if it isn't there is something wrong). This method of getting guaranteed website traffic is great if you get it right, but very expensive if you don't! There are other options over and above Google however. The other big search engines such as Yahoo and MSN run their own equivalents of the Google AdWords system.

For those without the experience or the money to run ppc campaigns, but who still want guaranteed website traffic, you will have to look further afield for your sources. There are a number of programs around that 'guarantee' hits to your site. My advice regarding this type of traffic program is to treat them with caution. My experience with them has not been very good and the results have ranged from abysmal to bordering on being against the laws of trade description!

If you look on the Internet, you will find a great deal of information regarding web sites and blogs. Developing information portals is one way to generate traffic, but you cannot just build a site and expect visitors to magically appear. There is a lot more to it than that. If your site contains plenty of original and useful content, then it has a chance to generate traffic over a period of time. Blogs are probably the best medium to use for site building because most types of blogs have built in features that tell the search engines of their existence and of changes to your site, as those changes occur.

Sadly, in order to guarantee traffic to your site, you need to do more than this. In order for you to start receiving traffic, your site will have to rise in the search engine's estimation. One method of doing this is by building link popularity, which means that you have to persuade other sites to show links to your site. There is a time element involved in doing this, but the cost (compared to other methods) is relatively low. But, if you value your time (and you should) there is an intangible cost to your link building.

Link building (otherwise known as building backlinks) is critical to driving guaranteed website traffic to your site. So how can you go about getting backlinks? Say for example, that you have a web site themed around health. You could post information on health blogs which are themed similarly to yours, as a comment for example, and then leave your link in the comment. The benefit of this approach is twofold. In the first instance, you get a backlink credit to your website, and secondly, if your content is good, you could get live visitors come and visit your site directly from the link that you gave.

As time passes by, people find more and more innovative ways in which to build backlinks and generate guaranteed website traffic. One of these methods involves creating something unique, like software for example, and registering that software in a software directory with links back to your site. If the directory in question has authority with the search engines (in other words it is highly regarded by the search engines), then the link back to you starts to do some wonderful things. Suddenly, you can get great surges in traffic and hopefully in revenue, if you have monetised your site.

Quickly power up your search engine rankings with quality backlinks, using innovative techniques that get targeted traffic to your site in next to no time.

How To Start Training A Dog For Agility

Introduction and History

Dog agility training began as a sport in the UK in the 1970s, and involves successful completion of an obstacle course. It's a great way to develop a strong bond between pet and owner; it can also help build confidence in timid dogs (and owners). It's also a great form of exercise as it uses not just the dog's physicality, but the intelligence as well. The human partner may find that their fitness improves as they are required to do as much work as the dog. Whilst agility training can be done to allow participation in competition, there's no rule to say it's not just for a fun time with your dog.

Type of Suitable Dog

Any dog can be trained for agility, although competitively, working breeds such as Border Collies tend to excel (to the point where they can have their own separate category when competing). It's possible to start when the pooch is a puppy, but as some of the activities are quite strenuous on the joints, it's recommended that the puppy should be at least 8 months old, and can obey basic commands, such as sit and stay. Both owner and dog also need to be fairly fit.

Equipment

What is required to begin training is a basic set of equipment: a tunnel; cones for weaving through; something to jump over; an "A" frame; and a table to pause on. This may seem daunting and expensive, but you may fine a club that you can join or a class in your area. However, as training for agility is a gradual process you may find that you can start slowly with one piece of equipment and build up the course gradually. Initially a lead and collar will be necessary until your dog is familiar with everything.

Procedure

It's best to start slowly: allowing your dog to become familiar with the obstacles. Walk your dog around the course, learning that there is no threat. You may find that you will have to demonstrate the obstacles to your dog so that he or she gets the idea of what he/or she is supposed to do. Start the jumps low and gradually increase the height. You may want to concentrate on one obstacle and then add more. Always, always praise and reward with treats when something, no matter how small, is done well. Never punish: the idea is for you to enjoy your time with your dog.

Some of the basic requirements for training a dog for agility, as well as a discovering the real secrets to training a dog. Learn how to deal with excessive barking, nipping or jumping, without scolding or hitting your dog.

Localization Testing

Typically, localization refers to the translation or the adaptation of one format into another, such that the changed format is more suitable for a specific area. Localization is most commonly done for software. It involves redesigning the software in such a manner that the requirements and expectations of the targeted segment can be met successfully. The first step would be changing the interface. An interface can be the audio or visual display that is used to communicate between the user and the machine or software. For instance, the messages that the program sends to the user have to be translated to the foreign language. The process is labor intensive and very comprehensive. A number of tools and software programs that assist in the process of localization can be bought easily.

Localized testing is done not only for software, but also for websites as well. Large websites of multi-national companies need to be accessible to a large variety of people. While localization testing, a few factors that need to be considered are character sets, keyboards, ASCII, error message identifiers, hot keys and hyphenation, spelling and sorting rules. The quality is not usually checked during localization testing. It includes additional inputs such as testing for upgrades, in-country testing, and hardware compatibility. Validation and verification of applications, linguistic accuracy, and consistency checks can be purchased separately. One of the advantages of localized testing is that potential errors can be weeded out, before they are localized and correcting them becomes costly. Localized testing providers also take care of post-release testing and corrections.

The advantage of letting professionals do localization testing is that it saves valuable time. Some websites contain politically sensitive or religiously objectionable material. Such gross mistakes could result in irreversible damage to the company's reputation.

Mattress Warehouses

Warehouses are business buildings that are used to store goods and materials. Many manufacturers, traders, importers, customs, exporters, and wholesalers use warehouses to store their items. Warehouses are generally plain large buildings, which are located in the industrial parts of the towns and have loading docks for loading and unloading vehicles. Sometimes loading is done directly from airports, railways, or the seaports. These warehouses generally use cranes and forklifts, which are based on the standardization of the ISO.

Mattresses are products or a piece of bedding, which is used while sleeping. They are made from many materials like foam, natural and synthetic fibers, and spring. Mattresses are difficult to maintain, especially if they consist of different delicate materials such as latex foam and viscoelastic foam. Mattresses, which are made in bulk, are generally stored in warehouses. There are special warehouses built particularly for the storage of mattresses, of all possible sizes and types. Mattress warehouses are located in areas that facilitate easy distribution so that their transportation is possible without damage. It also has special shelves built to keep the mattresses secure. When warehouses receive mattresses, they take responsibility for storing, packing, shipping, and distributing them.

Warehouse employees are given responsibility of transferring the goods from the place of manufacture to the place of distribution. Nevertheless, other fully automated mattress warehouses require much less workforce. Several trucks are engaged to drive to the loading port, and load the mattresses directly in the truck. Warehouses that are situated next to airports, railway stations, docks, and ports cut down on the transportation costs and time that would otherwise prove to be very expensive.

Warehouses are ideal for those who have virtual stores, or depend on e-commerce as many people order mattresses online and direct them to be sent to the warehouses for storage and delivery. These orders are packed, processed, and then shipped to the place of distribution. The customers buy mattresses in bulk quantity as they are often sold at a discounted rate.
